A moment of excellence ;)

In 2010 at the age of 11. I experienced a moment of excellence. It was prize giving night. Last year of Primary School and I was eager to move on to Intermediate.

 Through out the year my behaviour was average. I had lots of responsibilities within the school. I was hoping to receive one award.

 I was told to get there earlier because I was in Kapa Haka and we were doing a performance. I was really excited about it because my mum was going to get KFC if I received any awards. My Nana was there as well so I didn't want to play up.

 Once all the speeches were over I was listening to the names of the recipients I had a feeling I wasn't going to get anything so I was feeling a bit disappointed. The class awards were being named. My class was next and out of the blue the teacher said Shaye Fletcher. My first reaction was like what??? And all the other girls couldn't get it in their heads, because they thought they were going to get it and they didn't it was me! 

This has made me become more confident in myself and now I never stop believing.

Term 2 2012

Starting back at Tamaki Intermediate this term was fun! As well as being reunited with my friends I had finally began Year 8. School has been much different from what I had experienced in Term 1 while I was staying In America.  In the begining I was a bit nervous. I was put into room 12 and Teacher's Mrs. Parker Tofa and Mrs. Raj were very welcoming. I was very intrested in work that students have done prior to my arrival which could of had effect on test's etc for this term.  We were told about some of the academic and sports activities that we could take part in that term. Rugby and Netball was said to begin within the term, two very fit sports which isn't played where I lived.  Also discussed was a trip to Wellington in the third term since there isn't enough kids to go on a trip to the islands as usually happened why not gone on a trip a bit closer and  I havn't been to Wellington before so it was a good Idea.  This term I have participated in Rugby and tried out for netball.  I have gained more knowledge through most of my subjects. Have become more mature I think and have learnt from silly things that I did in the start.

Matariki Festival.

This year on the 21st of June there was a celebration in New Zealand which has the name Matariki. We celebrate this because it is the traditional Maori New Year.  Matariki is the Maori name for a group of stars also known as the Pleiads star cluster or Seven Sisters. You can see these stars at early dawn on when on high ground in parts of NZ. 

This year our school was going to hold a Matariki Festival.

 We were going to have games and competitions!  As well we were to present our own class item. For Room 12 we were singing Ka poioi . Leading up to the day of the festival we all practiced our song and for some students learnt our Brain Drain answers and the method to play string games. Finally the day came and I was all excited to see what other classes had to show. This was a competition if you remember me saying so there was a judge to decide who would win every activity.

 First off was Room 8's perfomance. They had put together a very informative slide show about Matariki and in the end sang a peaceful maori song which included the tune of Beyonce's Halo. Our turn next Room 12 , we ran up the stairs a bit nervous but ready to sing. Our own class member was playing gutair and helped us keep in time and in tune so thanks Irasa. Last but not least was Room 7 and sang some well known songs pretty good. Names Tihei Mauri Ora and a Prince Tui Teka E Ipo.

After that I went  to the School Library to be tested on the answers about Matariki for Brain Drain. There were some very competitive people who were eager to answer as many questions as asked which would raise points. At the end room 12 were named  the winners the other teams were really good but you cant waste time when there was a 10 second time limit to answer.

I walked into the hall with Tatiana and saw laughter and loudness while students were still competing in string games. We sat down and asked who was winning? The white board in the corner of the hall was very satisfying to say that we were coming second, following us was Room 8 and in the lead was Room 7.  I kind of knew it was going to happen though. Luckily Mrs. Bailey the organizer of this school event  had said she would take points of because of behaviour.

We were informed about the winning class at the next School Assembly and were giving a prize.  I really enjoyed Matariki this year inside and outside of school. Having a succesful Festival and enjoying celebrations with my whanau. This is what Matariki is about!

Radius Performance

This Tuesday some groups from our school went on a small trip to a Mt. Wellington rest home for elders. Kapa haka group, Choir, Cook Island group, Samoan group and the Tongan group were going to perform. We had to practice for this and make it perfect for Miss. Waetford.

We were driven to the rest home by van thanks to staff. When we arrived they were all waiting for us and I bet had looked forward to this day as much as others had. We had an order of performance. Their faces lit up when they saw and heard us and it really did make their day.

At the end a man named William said a story which made us all crack up! I think we all did well on that day.

DARE Recount

This term we had a very friendly constable officer come to our school to teach us about drugs, alcohol and the law.DARE stands for Drug Alcohol Resistance Education.  For two long weeks each second day Constable Taina Karaka would come into our class room and enjoyingly taught us. I looked forward to Taina coming because even though she was telling us terrible things that can or have happened it is really important to know these things. We were giving a question box for people to ask question they don't fell comfortable about asking in person to put it in there. Some people were stupid though and asked dumb questions.  We saw the bad effects of drugs. Pictures of what addicts have turned into. The classes of drugs Class A being the most harmful and Class C being just harmful.  Taina had put together slide shows or power points about Drugs, alcohol and bad behavior which can put you away into jail.  Through out this class of dare I have really enjoyed myself and have learnt so much. I know this will help me in the future.

First Aid Couse

A rainy but exciting day for us. That day we were learning First aid. I was quite happy because my dream job involves this type of thing. It was held in Room 11 with a friendly urse named Miss Akroyd. We sat down and she began talking about the important things that we have to do with what we are learning. Like CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation) and DRSABC . She also said we were going to have a bloody activity.

She asked us if we had any blood stories. We were all blank except for Sariah. She wanted to tell us about her sister who unfortunately fell through a window while dancing on the balcony. Luckily she is all right now.

Next we played with Uncle Bob. He doesn’t talk much because he was a mannequin. Our activity was, we had to get in a group and act like we just found someone on the ground and call for 111 for help . There were enough people in the group so there could be an operator, a person who cleaned the mouth after doing CPR, and a person giving CPR. Every round we had something new to do. I really enjoyed this; it was fun and a new learning experience which is now in my brain so if it happens one day I would know what to do.

The blood activity was next. The volunteer to show what we were about to do was Nathaniel. Helen did not know but she pretended that he loved cooking (which he does) and that he was making a tomato cake. Although that sounds wrong it was just pretend. So anyway he chopped up a tomato and accidentally cut his hand. Fake blood was soaked on the palm of his left hand and it looked yucky. We were told that we had to pretend that we got a cut (but really it’s just red white board marker) and our partner had to put a bandage on our wound. My partner was Maria T and she was excellent at it but me on the over hand I was not the best.

In conclusion of the first aid session we were given a bag which included magnets, pencil, paper, and a sticker of Amby the cartoon ambulance. From this lesson I learnt so much and I enjoyed every part. To be honest I didn’t want to leave. The best part of this was when she was talking to Maria and said she was munted it was funny.

Technology evaluation

It is always fun at Technology. And yesterday we had Art with Mrs. Baker. We started walking to the ICT lab where we learnt about the Famous Keith Haring. He was a astonishing new York City artist who was known from his bold lined drawings or graffiti. He used to draw on black surfaces with chalk so that it could be rubbed out if an error was made. Mrs. Baker made a slideshow presentation which included some of his cool art. In conclusion the power point ending with the date of when he sadly died of aids May 4, 1958 – February 16, 1990 Keith Haring seemed like a really cool person to me because he was not like other artists he thought outside the square and was unique.

Belated Mothers Day Letter.

Mother’s day is an occasion where children, can celebrate how much they love their mum. This year I have someone special, someone loving and someone close to me who I can say that they deserve this prize. That person is my mum.

She has known me for longer than I have known myself.  She was there when I first walked, first talked (haven’t stopped), and for my greatest achievements.

She loves me, feeds me, talks to me, makes me have a house, and takes me to school. And I make her coffee, talk to her, and do my chores. We get on well with each other. And love one another.
There aren’t any words to say why I love her so.

Rugby Tournament recount

 A sunny Tuesday morning when the birds were still chirping. Our team Tamaki Intermediate was about to play off against other Eastern Zone teams to get into the top so that they can go to the Inter-zone. Our faces full of eager and anticipation. We were ready to do it.

We were told that all of our games were against Pt. England. Oh man!! Pt. England is like the best team. But it didn't really matter because we can still beat them if we try. So we started doing warm ups. scrums and running around.

The whistle blew for the first kick off.  I was subbing for Chylsea.  Everyone tried their best but sadly we lost. We had two opportunities left to win. So we were looking forward to that.

We had a some food because some of us were hungry. So we practiced before our next game which I played. I tried to tackle the girls but they are just tough. We lost that game again. So we weren't going to Inter Zone but Mr Utanga said that he wants us to leave with pride which meant to win one game at least. That was our goal heading towards our next game.

Last game we went on with strength and were hoping that we could maybe get one try.  At the end of the game we lost.

Over all we enjoyed ourselves and have learnt from this.We hope we will win next time.

Natural Disaster- Droughts

A drought is caused when a large area for a long period of time has a massive shortage of water and sinking motion of air in a high-pressure cell, which results in decreasing relative humidity of the air and little or no precipitation .

During a drought, the land can become starved of nourishment. Usually this happens when a region has regular below normal amount of rainfall. It can cause agriculture, livestock, industry or human population to decrease rapidly. Droughts are a long lasting disaster, and although a drought can be noticed for a short while, the drought damaged area will suffer from terrible destruction and harm the local community.

When there is a drought it is deadly because there is either a lack of water or none, and everyone on earth needs water to survive and to live.During a drought most governments advise the people to drink less water, shower less and  not to wash cars often. When a drought becomes very serious there is a limit to how much water each person may use.You can get fined if you use more water than you're supposed to. In poor countries like Africa, world wide aid is needed to help and feed the people.

There have  been tragic events caused by droughts.  For instance there was a massive drought in the Amazon rain forest. It was during 2010, which had been more severe than the 2005 drought. The levels of water had fallen dramatically and some people say that it was completely dried up.The drought in 2010 had  started in an early austral summer during a tropical climate. The drought had the lowest water levels in half a century.If events like this were to  happen more often, the Amazon rain forest would become a big part of the green house gases.

My dream car

If I could change the look of my car it would be a dream come true. My car is a Holden, with cracked silver paint that has rust developing on the side of the left mirror. Oh it is disgusting, so yucky and old it would be wonderful for it to be brought to life again. The year it was made was quite some time ago 2002, the year my sister was born seems like only yesterday but the car looks expired like a loaf of bread, once you purchase the loaf it's nice and fresh you can't get enough of it but as the days go by you just leave it but until the day it has turned a Green blue you know you have to get rid of it. But in this case you can't get rid of it either you don't have the money or it's too much off a hassle. Car's have changed since the old days people get cars like there for free , but there not. my car stereo is on its way out I think it was two months ago since I heard music coming out of the speaker's. One of the safety belt's is missing I thing it is suck between the seat and the door, so only 4 people can go out at a time, when theres four kid's and one adult so not all of us can go out. Enough about my bombshell, If I could have my car renewed the tyres would be shining with sparkles, the seat's would be laziboy and the soft sheep skin would be stitched into the seat.The car would have a scent that would never disappear like vanilla . Everything would be pink!!! This would change my life, and would effect me and my friends. In saying this I could become a flash Taxi Driver!

My favorite subject

My favourite subject is Technology. The reason I enjoy Technology is because you get to learn new things and if you make a mistake it doesn't matter because you can improve. The main reason why I like it so much is because my best friends are in my same group and we always have a great time. We only get two lessons of technology a week and it is the best thing to do all week. Technology is different to other subjects because we don't have to get it right all the time and it is really fun.

Tamaki Intermediate School careers expo

Over the last few week’s Tamaki Intermediate School were studying about career’s which meant that student’s had to read about that certain career, Interview people who work as that job or in that company and put together a board about what they have learnt to show children, parents and other people of the community what they have done. This was because Tamaki Intermediate School were holding a career’s expo.
It all started when we were chosen into groups of 3 or 4, we were told to give 3 job titles that interested us. Then picked the 1 job that best suited our wishes. Our group was made out of 3 very smart and knowledgeable students from room 3. Our career that we had to study was an Architect. As a group we planned how we were going to research this certain career, which person was going to find out what and what we were going to research about.
We decided what we needed to research, they were: Yearly Salary, Day on the job of an Architect, Image’s of buildings, Interview a Trained Architect, Education Pathway (what subject you could take at college and what grades you have to get ect.), what you have to be good at and lastly a description of an Architect.
Moving on to researching those main point’s we came across some very interesting facts about Architect’s. Some very weird but smart image’s of building’s/structure’s. This researching didn’t take long at all we ticked off everything on the checklist but the Interview. So back on the computer’s we went looking at different company’s website’s seeing if there were any email’s we could send a questionnaire sheet to. We came across none, so we had a look in the yellow page’s looking under Architect’s and Architecture we found upon 2 email’s , wrote those down and sent them the sheet, NO reply. “Never mind!” said Sariah our Leader of the group.
Next came the presentation of our work, we had printed out everything we had collected all we needed was to glue them onto the board’s that we were given.
Our neighbour’s from room 4 lent us some Lego, with that Lego we had to design a building, then make a blue print and put it together. We as a group decided we would make a School for disabled children. That sounded pretty hard but what ever we wanted to do we could do it if we set our minds to it. It was helpful that there were ramps and lots of smooth tiles, while we built the structure; Sosaia was working on the blue print!! When we had finished everything I was so pleased not only with our group but our whole class, I thought we had all done a wonderful job!!
On Wednesday (the day that the expo started) we brought all of work to the hall were the expo was being held. In the afternoon it was our class’s turn to look at all the work all the classes had done. I was amazed with all the effort the whole school had done.
At 3:00 there was an expo held in the hall for who ever wanted to come for free. We had presenter’s of each career there who answered questions that they asked, and presented their board them. Over all the expo was very fun. The end!!

If you do not yet know me, here are some of my favourite things and some personal details. Okay, so my name is Shaye- shae shae is my nickname. I am 11 years old, my birthday is on the 7th of December,I am a proud European-Maori, I come from a big family. My favourite things are...... Shortland Street, the colour yellow, Chocolate, Music,, Netball, My culture and my family. I would have to say I am probably the biggest 11 year old Michael Jackson fan in this universe!!
